Does the American Staffordshire Terrier or American Pit Bull Terrier have locking jaws?

No. Studies show that the jaw structure is no different than any other breed of dog.
There is no evidence for the existence of any kind of 'locking mechanism' unique to either breed.

Are the American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier the same breed?

Yes and no. There is much controversy on the subject, but in the long run these are two seperate breeds of dog. Though both breeds are very simular is appearance, they have been bred over the years for different purposes. The American Staffordshire Terrier of today is a companion and show dog, while today's American Pit Bull Terrier is an all purpose working dog as well as a companion. Sadly some American Pit Bull Terriers are still used for dog fighting, even though such a thing is illegal in the United States.

Are American Staffordshire Terriers and American Pit Bull Terriers born vicious?

Absolutely not! There is a major difference between inherited and learned behaviors. No breed of dog is born vicious, this is something that must be learned. Both genetics AND enviroment together, neither alone, determine temperament of a dog. Neither the American Staffordshire Terrier nor the American Pit Bull Terrier were ever bred to be human aggressive in any way, shape or form.

Do American Staffordshire Terriers or American Pit Bull Terriers come in merle?

No, any merle American Staffordshire Terrier or American Pit Bull Terrier that is claimed to be pure-bred is a mixed breed.
The merle gene is not part of either breed.
